Atlantic Canadians Playing US College Baseball in 2023

With many US College Baseball 2023 seasons already underway and the rest starting soon, I thought it would be a good time to post about our Atlantic Canadian boys who are playing on US College teams.

While both cbplayers.com and canadianbaseballnetwork.com both maintain lists of ALL Canadians in US College Baseball, I decided to focus on the subset of players with hometowns in Atlantic Canada.

None of these lists are ever completely accurate as they rely on accurate and up to date data pulled/transposed from the websites of the various programs, as well as personal knowledge. The last time I checked there were around 1600 US College baseball programs and I can assure you that not all of them are great at updating their roster information.

For this list, if you notice someone is missing, or data that is incorrect, please let me know by using the comments function and I will make the necessary corrections.

Without further ado, here is the list of Atlantic Canadians on US College Baseball rosters for the 2023 season:

Guest Post: Recruiting Guidance from an NCAA Division 1 Coach

This is a guest post from Lou Proietti, a Canadian who is Associate Head Baseball Coach for the Stonehill College Skyhawks. Stonehill competes in the NCAA Division I Northeast Conference.

Lou recently reached out to me regarding our shared goal of helping young Canadian baseball players find their way in the game. In this first guest post, Lou will focus on the recruitment process for Canadian players targeting US College baseball programs. I hope you find it helpful.

Editor, Canadian Baseball

Advice for Canadian Baseball Players Trying to Get Recruited to US Schools

My name is Lou Proietti. I was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario. I went to Cathedral High School and have very fond memories of my childhood. Ever since I can remember I had the goal of playing college baseball in the US. I am currently the Associate Head Baseball Coach at Stonehill College in Easton, MA. We compete in the NEC (Northeast Conference) and just transitioned from Division 2 to Division 1 this year. Prior to this year, I was the Head Baseball Coach at Saint Peter’s University in Jersey City, NJ. I also have coaching experience at Rider University and Georgetown Preparatory School. I attended and played at UMASS Amherst in the A-10.

Being educated on the college baseball recruiting process can be very helpful to maximize potential opportunities. My personal perspective on the recruiting process has changed drastically from the time I was recruited as a player. My goal is to help you learn through my interactions with recruits and their families. It is important to understand that every player’s recruiting process and timeline will be different. The goal is to focus on what we can control. Here are some pieces of advice for players looking to play at the next level in college.

Put In the Work to Be Good Enough

This comes down to priorities and decisions. If you prioritize playing at the collegiate level, every decision you make through the course of your day should take you one step closer to your goal. College coaches receive hundreds of emails a week from potential recruits. My estimation is 90-95% of those recruits aren’t good enough to compete at our level. Give the coaching staff a reason to correspond with you. Quality stats, video of how your body moves, in game clips are all great ways to catch the coach’s attention. Bottom line, creating exposure for yourself won’t matter unless you are good enough to compete.

Do Your Research

Timing is a big part of the recruiting process. Some schools may not be looking for your position in that class. Look up rosters to see what year (class) other players are in, what kind of numbers do they have? Are there other Canadian players on the roster? Being educated on both the school and the baseball program when speaking with the coaching staff will go a long way. Coaches want to see that this is important to you, if you know nothing about the school or program, it becomes clear you haven’t put enough time or thought into the process.

Have a Plan

The more time you allocate to the recruiting process, the more opportunities you can create for yourself. It should take time to write individualized emails to each school you reach out to. Put together a list of your top 25 schools with a mix of all Divisions. Focus on all aspects of what you’re looking for including the baseball facilities, coaching staff, roster needs, academics, geography and size of school to name a few. Write down a list on paper and look up all contact information online for the schools on your list.

Key Components of a Quality Email

The old saying “You only get one first impression” applies when it comes to reaching out to coaching staffs to express your interest in their program. A quality email should be concise yet provide all the information a coaching staff is looking for. Emails should include the following:

-Introduction (Include Name, Class, Position, Stats, Awards, Contact Info, etc.)
-Video clip (In game is best, nothing more than 2-3 mins)
-Contact Information for Coaches/References
-Proof you’ve done your research (Ask about prospect camps, comment about previous season)

Don’t Overlook Small Details

Most emails that college coaches receive are generalized and unorganized. If you are willing to put the time in to reach out to college coaches, it doesn’t make sense to go through the motions and send out a general email with no specifics. You will not get much of a response and your email will fall through the cracks with the hundreds of other emails that college coaches receive from potential recruits. Make sure you look up the specifics of the school you are reaching out to. Mention something like their recent track record to prove you are genuinely interested in their school. Coaches can tell when you write an email that is meant specifically for their institution. The more genuine of a level of interest you can express, the better likelihood of a response you will receive.

Separate Yourself From Other Recruits

Reaching out to a coaching staff through email is a great starting point to let them know you are interested in playing for them. The best way to get in front of the entire coaching staff is to attend Showcase events the colleges host on campus. You will get an opportunity to show what you can do to the entire staff and also get a sense of the competition as most other players at the event are also interested in playing at that school. There are also a variety of quality showcases throughout the US that are independently run. There are both quality events and those that are just a cash grab so be sure to do your homework regarding which coaches are attending and what sort of track record there has been for players getting signed from the event.

Find the Right Fit

It is important that you find a school that you would attend even if baseball does not work out for some reason. Getting on campus will help give you a good sense whether you can picture yourself attending that school. The goal is to build a skillset and network at whatever school you choose to help create opportunities for yourself once you’ve graduated. What is important to you? This answer can differ depending on the student-athlete. Geography, school size, class size and campus life can be some of the factors when considering which type of school you prefer to attend. You should aspire to play at the highest level possible, while also making sure you will get an opportunity to compete at that institution. There are opportunities at every level to have a great experience playing baseball and getting a college education. Don’t focus completely on the Division 1 level, there are some great universities and college baseball programs at all levels that can offer great opportunities for you.

Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or if there is any way I can help you in your pursuit of college baseball. My email address is lproietti@stonehill.edu

Atlantic Collegiate Baseball Association – 2021 – Week 1 Summary

I am not sure how long I am going to be able to keep it up, but I decided that, at least for Week 1, I would provide summaries of all of the games that took place in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball Association (ACBA).

If you are not familiar with the league, it includes University and College teams from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. It is a six team league that includes Acadia University (Wolfville, NS), Dalhousie University (Halifax, NS), Holland College (Charlottetown, PE), St. Francis Xavier University (Antigonish, NS), St. Mary’s University (Halifax, NS), and the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton, NB).

With COVID-19 cancelling the Spring 2021 season for the CCBC in Western Canada, and the seasons for Ontario’s OCAA and OUA baseball not starting until next weekend, Canadian University / College baseball got started this past weekend in Quebec and Atlantic Canada. The Atlantic Collegiate Baseball Association (ABCA) had a full slate of games in Week 1, and as is typical, they were all weekend Double Headers. Despite all of the rain in most of the Maritimes this weekend, it looks like they were able to get in all of the scheduled games.

If you find this post helpful and you would like to see more, please let me know in the comments.

If you find this post a complete waste of time, I guess you should probably let me know that as well – please be gentle though 🙂

Please note that I am pulling the information from the Box Scores of games scored in Game Changer. I am sure there will be some mistakes in my recaps. Feel free to let me know about those in the comments as well.

Finally, the ACBA standings after Week 1 are shown to the right. The University of New Brunswick Reds lead the pack so far after going undefeated in their first 4 games. The Holland College Hurricanes are right on their heels with a 3 and 1 record this past weekend.

Now on to the game summaries…

The Top Canadian University and College Baseball Programs From 2015 to 2019

The University and College Baseball landscape in Canada is pretty complicated with large differences in season timing, institutional support, and varsity status depending mostly on geography. Although there have been some shifts in the landscape since it was written, A Beginner’s Guide to University Baseball In Canada written by George Rigakos of Carleton University, is very helpful in explaining the lay of the land.

A comprehensive list that ranks baseball programs across multiple levels for US University and College Baseball can be found at Massey Ratings. Unfortunately that sort of comparison has never really existed for Canadian programs.

The closest thing to a head to head comparison for Canadian programs would be Testing an RPI Ranking System for Canadian University Baseball also written by Rigakos, this time with Mitchell Thompson. Unfortunately, as Rigakos and Thompson pointed out in the article, RPI has it’s limitations, and their comparison only includes University teams in Eastern Canada.

With all of the dislocation going on south of the border, including cancelled seasons and extra years of eligibility for varsity athletes, I believe many Canadian baseball players have begun to question whether the US College route is the right choice for them right now. Given that backdrop, I decided to take a crack at a more comprehensive ranking of Canadian programs and starting researching it a few months ago. With the CCBC schedule starting in Alberta and BC tomorrow, I thought it would be a good time to share my findings.

Here is how I came up with the rankings:

  1. The list includes most (but not all) teams associated Canadian Universities and Colleges regardless of the league they play in
    • 5 years of data was required but an exception was made for Fraser Valley given their recent success
  2. Games against any University or College program in North America are included in the data
  3. Programs are ranked for their results from 2015 through 2019
    • 2020 was a write-off and several programs may not play in 2021 either
  4. The Overall Rankings are based on a formula that combines:
    • Weighted Strength of Schedule (WSOS)
      • Calculated by the weighted average strength of the leagues each of their opponents play in, ranked as follows:
        1. NCAA Division 1
        2. NCAA Division 2 and NAIA
        3. NCAA Division 3 and US Junior Colleges (all divisions)
        4. OUA
        5. CCBC, OCAA, and the former CCBA Northern Division
        6. ACBA (former CCBA Atlantic Division) and RSEQ
    • Average Number of Games Played
    • Win / Loss Percentage

The data was gathered through information that is publicly available on team and league websites. Gathering all of this data from many different sources took a lot of time but is only as accurate as the source information that is found on those websites. I certainly don’t think that this is a perfect formula to evaluate Canadian baseball programs, but I think it is a good approximation. It certainly incorporates more programs than any I have seen elsewhere and also attempts to make a comparison across the various leagues. Frankly I was surprised by some of the results that came from this analysis.

I have no doubt that there will be many situations where someone says, “That’s wrong. Program A is definitely better than Program B.” What I would say to that is, perhaps that is true in a head to head matchup this season, but that was never really what I was trying to compare. I am trying to provide a more holistic comparison over several years that hopefully helps some Canadian high school players and their families make more informed decisions.

With all that said, here is the list:

Canadian Baseball in 2020 – Cancellations and Restarts

img_0067With the COVID-19 pandemic wreaking havoc on almost everything in our everyday lives in 2020, sports came to a grinding halt in North America in early to mid-March. Baseball was particularly hard hit as the season was just getting ready to ramp up for many leagues and US College baseball had just gotten underway.

In this article we will have a look at what the impacts of COVID-19 have been on baseball in Canada with regard to cancellations and delays as well as what the restart plans look like for each Province.

Provincial Baseball Restart Plans

Since we have had more than our fair share of bad news this year overall, I thought I would actually begin this article with the restart plans by Province. I am also including information on Provincial championships where available.

I have tried to make these lists as complete an accurate as possible but if I have made any mistakes or missed anything please let me know by leaving a comment.

I will make periodic updates to both tables as more information becomes available. Hopefully we can start to hear more about restarts than cancellations going forward.
